A perfect home theatre is not just about buying the right recliners — it's about placing them correctly. Get the layout wrong and even the most expensive seats will feel uncomfortable. Get it right and an ordinary room transforms into a genuine private cinema.

At Sky Recliners, we have planned and installed home theatres in rooms from 120 sqft studio apartments to 1,200 sqft dedicated cinema rooms across India. This guide distils that experience into a step-by-step framework you can apply to your space today.

Step 1: Measure Your Room Precisely

Before choosing a recliner, you need four measurements:

  • Room Length (from screen wall to rear wall)
  • Room Width (wall to wall)
  • Ceiling Height (affects acoustic treatment and lighting plans)
  • Door/Window Positions (affects layout options and light blocking)

Minimum Room Size: For a functional home theatre with even a single row of recliners, you need at least 12ft × 10ft. For a comfortable 2-row layout, we recommend 20ft × 14ft or larger.

Step 2: Calculate Screen Viewing Distance

The ideal viewing distance depends on your screen/projector size. The industry standard formula:

  • 100" screen: Ideal seating distance 10–14 ft from screen
  • 120" screen: Ideal seating distance 12–17 ft from screen
  • 150" screen: Ideal seating distance 15–21 ft from screen

For a standard home theatre, we recommend a 100–120" screen. This means your first-row recliners should be at least 10–12 ft from the screen wall.

Step 3: Plan Your Seating Rows

Sky Recliners' standard recliner dimensions:

  • Standard Seat Width: 24 inches (2 ft) per seat
  • Standard Seat Depth (reclined): 60–66 inches (5–5.5 ft per seat)
  • Armrest Width: 5 inches standard, 7 inches premium

To calculate seats per row:

  1. Take your room width
  2. Subtract 1 ft each side for wall clearance (2 ft total)
  3. Divide by seat width (2 ft) + armrest contribution
  4. Round down to the nearest whole number

Example: 14ft wide room → 14 - 2 = 12ft usable → 12 / 2.2 = 5.4 → 5 seats per row

Step 4: Calculate Walkway Width

Walkways between seat rows are often the most neglected aspect of home theatre planning. Too narrow and your guests are forced to fold up or climb over seated people to access their seats.

  • Minimum walkway: 2 ft — workable but tight
  • Comfortable walkway: 3 ft — our recommendation for most homes
  • Premium walkway: 4+ ft — for luxury theatres with elevated rear rows

Calculate row spacing: Seat depth (5.5 ft reclined) + walkway (2–3 ft) = 7.5–8.5 ft per row. A 20ft room can comfortably fit 2 rows with a 3ft walkway, with 3–4ft left for the screen projection throw.

Step 5: Two-Row vs One-Row Layout
